May Newsletter

Can you believe it is June already? It feels like just yesterday we were deciding the appropriate time to put away our Christmas trees.

In a month’s time, we will hit the mid-year mark and that can bring some anxiety.

We are firm believers in starting whenever you can, wherever you are, with whatever you have. If you are feeling some pressure, this is your sign to celebrate how far you have come before embarking on next steps.

At 4040, we are being patient with ourselves as well. “Slow progress is still progress.”

Let’s get into what May had to offer.

Angaza Outreach Programme Update

On the 2nd May, we held an evaluation meeting with teachers from Merowa and Quentin Junior Schools to garner feedback about the effectiveness of the programme on the learners. We also listened to their ideas on what can be incorporated into our sessions.

It was highlighted that the programme has made a tremendous impact on the literacy of the students, especially in terms of reading and spelling.

Teachers recommended the integration of more spelling bees for upper primary learners to boost their self-confidence, as well further improve their spellings; more hands-on skills to promote innovation; and mental health support.

The feedback was well received and we look forward to strengthening our intervention based on these ideas.

Term II of the Angaza Outreach  Programme resumes on the 7th of June. We held a training for our facilitators on 31st  May. This is to prepare them to deliver sessions to the children at our partner schools.

We cannot wait to reunite with our favourite people.

Holiday Programme at the Angaza Resource Centre

From the 2nd to the 22nd of May 2024, we hosted 24 youngsters from Kibuli and the surrounding communities at the Angaza Resource Centre for the holiday programme.

The programme focused on basic computer skills; alongside literacy which was delivered through storytelling, roleplay and word games.

Other life skills such as resourcefulness and self-awareness were taught to help young people to understand themselves and how they can use resources in their midst to address contemporary challenges in their communities.

We had a lot of fun delivering sessions to these young people and learnt a great deal from them. We look forward to hosting them again on the next school break.

In the same spirit, our team worked with teachers from our partner schools to develop resource materials that will aid sessions with children from lower primary while at the Angaza Resource Centre.

Special appreciation to our Angaza Resource Centre team for working toward the successful implementation of activities at the centre.

The 4040 Hangout

Learning and growth are at the centre of what we do at 4040 and we create opportunities for our volunteers to do just that.

On Saturday,18th May, we hosted our first Hangout of the year. Hangouts are events where our volunteers and other young people listen and learn from professionals on different aspects of life, including career growth and development.

At the Hangout, Benjamin Rukwengye, the Founder and CEO of Boundless Minds shared some insight into navigating passion and career choices. He recommended that for this to happen, we need to; understand our career and passion; build a community that will support and provide guidance; and prioritise self care to avoid burnout.

We are grateful to Benjamin for sharing his knowledge and experience with our volunteers. They are better for it.
