Story of Change
How a Post on X ( formerly twitter ) inspired Barbara’s Journey to 4040
When Barbara Leni first stumbled upon a post about 40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation (4040) on X ( formerly twitter ) in March 2024, she didn’t know it would become one of the most defining parts of her life. At the time, she had never heard of the organization, but something about the call for volunteers spoke to her.
Out of curiosity and a deep desire to serve, she decided to apply. Weeks later, an email landed in her inbox . She had made it in. That marked the beginning of her 4040 journey, one that would soon shape her outlook on service, teamwork, and leadership.
For Barbara, volunteering wasn’t new, but 4040 offered something different , a sense of belonging. “I’ve always had a deep desire to volunteer and be part of something that gives back to the community,” she shares. “There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with knowing your time and effort can make someone else’s life a little better.”
At 4040, she found a space where she could do just that, while also learning, growing, and expressing herself freely. What she appreciates most is the organization’s welcoming culture , no one is forced to fit into a box. “Everyone brings their individuality, and somehow it all works together beautifully,” she says.
Of all her experiences, Barbara’s most memorable moments are tied to the people and the opportunities 4040 has given her. “I’ve met incredible individuals who inspire and challenge me,” she says. Through 4040, she’s been part of mentorship programs that have shaped her both personally and professionally.
But the moment that stands out most was when she received the Volunteer of the Year award. “It was unexpected but deeply meaningful,” she recalls. “It made me realize that the effort, the time, and even the little things I had done were seen and appreciated.”
Since joining, Barbara has seen 4040 evolve in remarkable ways . She highlights the first-ever prom organized by the team in September 2025 and the growth of the Angaza Outreach Program, which now includes more creative projects for children. “There’s a lot more structure, collaboration, and creativity within the team now,” she says.
On a personal level, 4040 has transformed Barbara’s perspective on leadership and teamwork. “I used to think leadership was about giving directions,” she admits, “but I’ve learned that it’s about collaboration, empathy, and consistency.” The experience has taught her patience, adaptability, and the importance of seeing challenges as opportunities to grow.
To new volunteers joining 4040, Barbara’s advice is simple yet profound: come with an open mind and willingness to learn. “You grow by doing , whether it’s planning events, working on outreach programs, or handling behind-the-scenes communication. Be ready to give your best, but also enjoy the process,” she adds. “The laughter, the teamwork, the shared wins , they all add up to something meaningful.”
Barbara’s story is a reminder that sometimes, the smallest actions can lead to the most meaningful journeys and that anyone can make a difference when they step forward with an open heart.
