#4040Prom – WHAT A NIGHT!

On 27th September, the Angaza Resource Centre came alive with music, laughter, and generosity at 4040’s first-ever Prom-themed fundraiser. Dubbed “A Second Chance at Prom,” the event combined glamour, nostalgia, and philanthropy, all in support of a bold new initiative: the Mobile Library Project.

Uganda’s literacy story is complex. While the national literacy rate rose to 74% in 2024, gaps remain wide, especially in primary schools. Overcrowded classrooms, scarce textbooks, and high teacher absenteeism leave many children behind. UNEB reports that only 35% of Primary Three pupils can read at the expected level, and youth digital literacy stands at just 20%. Since 2023, the 40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation (4040) has addressed these gaps through the Angaza Resource Centre in Kibuli. The Centre serves over 200 children weekly with ICT, literacy, and life skills sessions, engages over 30 teenagers during holidays, and has trained more than 100 teachers in ICT, phonics, and early learning assessment. But distance, transport costs, and limited space mean many schools still cannot access these vital.

Putting Books on Wheels

The Mobile Library Project will take learning directly to 20 schools without libraries or labs. “Our mobile library will bring books, computers, and digital resources directly to the children who need them most,” says Gloria Mbabazi, Head of the Angaza Resource Centre. “It ensures children can read, learn, and dream big without the barriers of distance or cost.”

Teachers and learners are already excited. John Mbayo, a teacher at Merowa Junior School, explains, “With limited textbooks, pupils often share a single copy. A mobile library means every child can read and practice individually.” Fifteen-year-old Aisha adds, “If the library comes to us, I can finish assignments faster and learn new words.”

Voices from the Night

Prom attendees shared their excitement and support. “I loved every moment of the evening, from the music to the dancing, but knowing it’s for a good cause made it even more special,” said attendee Liz Bahondera. Another guest, William Sentamu, added, “It’s amazing to see young people leading the way in changing lives through education. I feel proud to be part of it.”

4040 volunteers also reflected on the impact. “Watching our guests enjoy themselves while supporting literacy was a dream come true,” said Hatimah Namakula, a 4040 volunteer. “Every ticket, every donation, every smile counts toward giving children a future filled with opportunity.”

A Night of Celebration and Impact

The Prom was filled with live performances, karaoke, dancing, and reunions, all while supporting a vital cause.

Since 2012, 4040 has grown into one of Uganda’s most dynamic youth-led charities, with over 600 volunteers reaching more than 3,500 children. The Mobile Library is the next frontier, putting books and digital tools on wheels, closing literacy gaps, and inspiring a culture of learning where children can thrive, explore, and dream without limits.
