The Angaza Resource Centre Drops Everything to Read

In commemoration of D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) Day, the Angaza Resource Centre dropped everything to read with the children from March 10th to 14th.

This day is recognized annually, on 15th March in Uganda as designated by the Ministry of Education.

Guest readers conducted a series of read-aloud sessions aimed at promoting a love for reading among learners while enhancing their literacy skills.

Among the guest readers were Daphne Ampire Karama, a TV and scriptwriter, actress and producer; Penninah Nabirye, 4040’s Fundraising and Partnerships Lead; Edith Baganda, actress and entrepreneur; Daniel Omara, an accomplished comedian; Marijan Hussein, an actor; Allan Manzi, a filmmaker; Kato Katende, a writer, filmmaker and storyteller; Rahma Kunihira, a volunteer at 4040 and a team from Deloitte Uganda, an audit firm.

A diverse range of stories were read from different books in the ARC library, including 4040 publications. The readers discussed the lessons learnt from each story and discovered new words and their meanings.

Thrilled to read to the learners, Debbie Amulen from Deloitte Uganda commended 4040 for its efforts to promote literacy through activities such as D.E.A.R. Day.

“It has been an exciting experience hearing children explaining words in the way that they do and helping them to learn new ones.”

Rose, an excited learner from Merowa Junior School, lauded the reading sessions for teaching her pronunciation and life lessons such as honesty.

“I can’t wait for the next one. I learnt to pronounce the word sensation.” Rose said.

Stanley appreciated the competition to spell words he had learnt from the storybooks, highlighting that it ignited confidence for him to participate in the spelling.

“I spelt the word confidence correctly and teacher Penninah gave me a pencil and sharpener.”

About 4040 and the Angaza Resource Centre

The 40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation, founded in 2012, is driven by the conviction to enhance literacy and learning opportunities for underprivileged children.

With immense support from local resource mobilisation, the Foundation has supported over 3,500 children.

Through initiatives such as the Resource Centre, 4040 has made significant strides in increasing school enrollment, retention, and access to quality education in underserved communities.

The Angaza Resource Centre (ARC) is a child-friendly safe space in Kibuli furnished with learning resources that are freely accessible by community schools and out-of-school children.

The ARC gives access to learning aids such as books, computers, games and other resources they would ordinarily have no access to.  It offers a fun environment for children to play and interact with their peers.

Additionally, teachers are equipped with skills for learner-centred education, resource making, inclusivity and leadership. Training conducted included phonics, ICT, and early-grade assessment.  This is all done at no cost to the beneficiaries.
