13 incredible years of 4040

Dear Friend ,

Our hearts are filled with gratitude for you, especially during this period. We hope you know just how much you mean to us.

As you may know by now, both Ramadhan and Lent are here.

Whether you subscribe to either of them, or neither, we encourage you to take some time off during this season, to help those in need, whether it is an individual, community or through an organisation. You never know how much impact you will create.

This period is particularly special to us, as it is where our story began. You know it but we never tire of sharing it.

Our 13th Anniversary

On the 27th of February 2012, our Founder and Team Leader, Esther Kalenzi started a Facebook page and named it “40 Days Over 40 Smiles.”

The hope was that she would create over 40 smiles on the faces of underprivileged children during the 40 days of Lent.
The page birthed 4040 and 13 years later, here we are.

What a journey it has been!

13 incredible years of empowering children through literacy, training teachers, and putting up infrastructure all the while promoting volunteerism and local philanthropy.

On our 13th anniversary, we celebrate the unwavering support of our volunteers, partners, supporters and friends who have given their time, skills, experience resources to the Foundation’s work to contribute to literate and equitable communities.

Thank you for being an invaluable part of our story!

Phonics refresher training for teachers

From 30th January to 1st February, the Angaza Resource Centre hosted a 3-day refresher training in phonics for teachers from our partner schools, a year after the inaugural sessions.

During the training, teachers revisited phonics concepts such as phonemic awareness, vocabulary, writing, and reading comprehension.

Phonics, as a fundamental component of literacy development, resharpened the ability of educators to utilise it as a powerful tool to enhance reading and writing skills among learners.

D.E.A.R Day

This month, we shall commemorate D.EA.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Day with reading sessions from 13th-16th March.

We are excited to host our guest readers at the centre.

We will introduce them in the forthcoming days.  Look out for that on our socials.

Volunteer recruitment

We concluded the recruitment process for the volunteers who will serve in our different departments this year.

With almost 400 amazing applicants, it was difficult to make certain decisions but we appreciate the interest, passion and brilliance that we experienced.

On-boarding sessions and training will be conducted to prepare them to execute their duties. We welcome the volunteers to the 4040 community and look forward to growing together.

Angaza Outreach Programme

The break is over and we can’t wait to reunite with our faves at Merowa and Quentin Junior Schools on 7th March.

This term, our sessions will focus on building the hands-on skills of the learners. The hands-on approach will equip the learners with practical skills while nurturing soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, among others.

We also hope to support children to realise their full potential and provide them with foundational skills that will prepare them for the competence-based secondary school curriculum. We can’t wait to show you the products we will create with the children

We celebrate our volunteers of the Month, Juma Ashahid, Susan Nasweri and Drolence Nalukenge from the Communications and Marketing, Angaza Outreach Programme and Finance and Operations Departments, respectively. We are eternally grateful for your dedication to 4040.
