JULY HIGHLIGHTS

Hi Friend,

Welcome to August

It wasn’t easy but we made it. We are excited to share what we have been up to over the past few weeks, from empowering conversations and creative learning experiences with the children to celebrating the incredible people who make our work possible. In this edition, you will find highlights from our recent events, updates on upcoming activities, and stories that continue to remind us why we do what we do. Whether you are a volunteer, supporter, partner, or curious reader, thank you for being part of this journey with us. By now, you know gratitude is our middle name, and you make it so easy. Let’s dive in. Shall we?

Pen the Future: Young Writers’ Competition

We recognised and celebrated 13 brilliant young writers from Merowa Junior School, Quentin Junior School, and Vallerian Primary School who participated in our Pen the Future: Young Writers competition.
The 13 winners poured their hearts into poems and essays about family, friendship, the environment, leadership, and the future.
Out of 72 submissions, their stories stood out, and we couldn’t be prouder.
A huge thank you to the parents, teachers, and friends who joined us at Merowa Junior School to cheer them on. Their presence made the day extra special.
Special shoutout to our amazing volunteers who keep showing up and making this work possible. We see you, we appreciate you.
To our partners and supporters: thank you for believing in us and investing in our dream to give children better opportunities.

Menstrual health awareness

We were honoured to host Molly Nabwami, a passionate Menstrual Health Educator, at our partner schools.
The session opened up a safe and respectful space where learners could ask honest questions and receive empowering answers.

It was an eye-opening experience for both girls and boys, and we hope that it will build a more understanding and supportive school environment for the girls.
We are deeply grateful to Molly for her time and knowledge.

Career Day 2025

We hosted an inspiring Career Day at Quentin and Merowa Junior Schools, spotlighting unconventional careers in photography, music, culinary arts, fashion, and more.
The learners discovered that success can come from passion-driven paths, and every dream is valid.
Huge thanks to our amazing guests: Evaline Tino, Irene V Nambi, Pearl Gahwera, Julius Sese, Emmanuel Omara, John Baptist Kijambu, Anikua Jenevive and Viola Kisakye for sharing your journeys and lighting the way for our learners.
Relatedly, our pupils rolled up their sleeves and learnt how to make counterbooks from scratch. It is part of our initiative to nurture resourceful, problem-solving children who can creatively use resources in their midst to address real-world challenges.
We had such a blast, and we can’t wait to put these books to use during our Angaza sessions next term.

Volunteer Graduation

On 27th July, we celebrated our incredible volunteers who have journeyed with us since 2022. Each volunteer received a certificate of appreciation, honouring their time and dedication to 4040. Special recognition went to Barbra Mercy Leni, Penninah Nabirye, Solomon Raymond Kiggundu, and Valerie Muwombefu Muwanga as outstanding volunteers for the respective years.

A unique award was given to Violet Nabanoba Kawuma for her long term service spanning over a decade, exhibiting incredible passion and dedication.
We are grateful to all our volunteers for all they do with and for us. 4040 is what it is because of YOU.

Volunteers of the Month

This month, we proudly celebrate Moses Okwir, Jenevive Anikua and Arinda Mwine. Whether it is showing up, going the extra mile in their roles, or quietly holding things together behind the scenes, Moses, Jenevive and Arinda embody the spirit of service that fuels our work. We are lucky to be chosen by them.
